Swath XL™ Guidance System
Guiding Principles
Mid-Tech's Swath XL is the result of several generations of lightbar design improvements. Its tremendous flexibility and multitude of features sets a new standard in ground-based GPS guidance.
Guiding an operator along straight lines of a pre-set width, Swath XL is more effective than foam markers and just as accurate. It compensates for the limitations of human vision as toolbars and booms become larger, safely extending the hours of application work to twilight or even night when wind conditions improve.
A weatherproof case encloses Swath XL's lightbar allowing it to be mounted on the hood of a vehicle, or in the cab.
High-intensity lights on the lightbar are easily seen in peripheral vision. Brightness/contrast control adjustments made on the hand-held Smartpad takes the stress out of running in low light conditions

Drive it Your Way

Set-up is simple with as few as two (2) keystrokes needed to begin a day's work. When setting up Swath XL for the first time, detailed information is entered and stored such as GPS antenna position, drive sensitivity, measurements in US or Metric units, and whether to steer towards the center line (swath mode) or towards the flashing lights (vehicle mode).
When spraying the headlands, Swath XL doesn't require the operator to specify the number of passes, but automatically adjusts for whatever border pattern the operator creates. At the same time, a field boundary can be made which is displayed on the Smartpad as you build your "where applied" map. Swath XL allows you to create multiple guidelines in fields with irregular boundaries. When running lanes, Swath XL automatically snaps to the next guideline without pushing any buttons.

Choose What's Reported
A text display above the guidance lights instantly reports information that's important to you, cycling from one report to the next. At set-up, you can choose up to three messages from the following options:
  • Cross Track Number
  • Swath Number
  • Heading error
  • Ground Speed
  • Applied Area
  • Off (no message)

Swath XL reports system failures such as loss of DGPS signal, and approaching hazards, which have been marked ahead of time. These critical messages are reported in the lightbar LED display, the red lights on the lightbar flash, and an audible alarm on the Smartpad sounds.

Smartpad Marks a Point, Saves a Map

Swath XL's new, color touch-screen Smartpad II displays total field area and area completed as you drive, updating instantly. If hazards have been mapped ahead of time, these also show on the backlit display. You can mark and name points and hazards in the field that become part of your "where applied" file to be used later in other tasks like variable rate application.
The Smartpad II houses a CompactFlash slot and can record and save your work to a data card. At the end of the day, download it to an office computer and view a "where applied" map in Mid-Tech's Fieldware Tools software. Saving these fields on an office computer completes a permanent record that can be incorporated into a GIS program for future analysis.

The Smartpad II can run from internal batteries.  When connected to a GPS receiver, battery operation provides a convenient field scouting and mapping tool.  The rugged design of the Smartpad is perfect for in-field use.  And a convenient mount for this handheld computer makes it even more versatile.

Warranty

Mid-Tech supports Swath XL with technical support, and a warranty on parts and labor for one year. An extended 3year warranty is also available.

Other Details

  • Lightbar display in curved guidance mode

Lightbar display when approaching a pre-defined hazard (accompanied by an audible alarm)

    Lightbar
8-character LCD reports key information to keep you instantly updated with your choice of up to three messages. These include cross track error, heading error, ground speed, area applied-or no message at all. In curved guidance, a pattern is displayed which simulates the path to follow.

High intensity green, yellow and red lights can be adjusted from extra bright to very dim with just the push of a button. Drive sensitivity, the number of inches/feet each LCD represents, is set by the operator and can be adjusted at any time.

Traffic light patterns on each side of the lightbar have special meaning. Green indicates “all’s clear,” or go. Yellow shows that you are approaching a pre-marked hazard. Red warns that you are upon that hazard, or that a system error has occurred such as the loss of DGPS signal.

Rugged polycarbonate alloy construction and adherence to rigorous manufacturing standards made the Swath XL virtually impossible to break in third-party testing. The lightbar housing is impermeable to harsh chemicals and is weather resistant.

Adaptable mounting bracket allows mounting outside on the hood, or in the cab on the dash or near the visor.

Sturdy cables with weather-pack connectors link each component and optional cable extensions permit many mounting options.

    SmartPad
Simple 6-button keypad permits data entry with ease-especially for folks with big hands. The entire system can be set up with as few as two keystrokes: Enter, Enter, and you’re ready to conduct guidance.

Internal PCMCIA drive uses standard data cards and saves all field records that you have created. These records can be downloaded in the office for a permanent record. Also, field boundaries and hazards from previous years can be set up on the data card in advance to save valuable time in the field.

    SmartPad Display
The high-resolution 3” x 2” backlit display has many advantages. Maps can be viewed as you make them so that skips can be seen before you leave the field. Five zoom levels provide perfect visibility. Icons on the right of the display show menu options where additional information is instantly available.

    Fieldware Tools
Swath XL Deluxe comes with Mid-Tech Fieldware Tools software which helps store, manage and report your work. A variety of reports are easily generated, and can support billing and reporting. Field maps can be overlaid on base maps such as a USGS Quad map.

Transferring files to your office system archives your work more permanently and allows you to manage the data records. It also frees up valuable disk space on the Smartpad data card, which can be used over and over again. As with all valuable data, we recommend frequent download and backup
